Eyes to See the Unseen

If you were around in the 1990s, you’d probably remember the famous “Magic Eye” optical illusion posters and books everywhere.  As kids, we were obsessed.  On first glance, each image appeared to be a graphic mess of bright colors that made very little sense.  But if you looked hard enough and crossed your eyes a certain way, out of the beautiful mess, a hidden 3D image immerged.

It took me a little while to figure out.  I remember the frustration of just staring into the image, confused.  But after what seemed like hours of practice, I finally mastered the visual trickery of discovering the secret image.

When I first began to carefully and diligently study the context of the Bible, most passages were likewise mentally puzzling and just as mysterious.  I clearly had very little understanding on what the authors were trying to convey.

I began to sincerely ask God to help me understand his word.

Notice how David cries out for understanding…

“Open my eyes that I may see wonderful things in your law.”  (Ps. 119:18)

In other words, give me the understanding to uncover the hidden truths of your word.

And only then, with persistent repetition, he began to open my understanding to the scriptures.  Just as the 3D “Magic Eye” images, what previously seemed a hidden mystery, suddenly began to make perfect sense.

The prophet Isaiah prophesied of a time when God would grant his people the ability to understand the scriptures…

…the deaf shall hear the words of the book, And the eyes of the blind shall see out of obscurity (Isa. 29:18 NKJV)

Obscurity means something that is unclear and difficult to understand.

God would grant his people spiritual eyes to see and understand the concealed messages of the Bible.

For He has shut their eyes, so that they cannot see, And their hearts, so they cannot understand.  (Isa.44:18)

“Heal my heart and make it clean

Open up my eyes to the things unseen…”
