A Short Word Study
A family member who moved to the United States a few years ago has been struggling to learn English. Recently, she vented to me about how difficult it is to navigate the various variations of words that can have the same meaning.
While she had a valid point, I realized I had learned to appreciate the different variations of words and enjoy studying their distinctions, especially when meditating on a particular scripture. By examining a word's origin and meaning, I often gain a deeper understanding of what the passage is trying to communicate.
Sometimes, two words may seem synonymous, but their meanings are almost opposite. For instance, a recent study I did on the words 'seek' and 'search'. Although they appear to mean the same thing, Biblically, they reveal two opposing views.
After researching various sources, I found that "seek" means to look for something that is not necessarily visible, to look with purpose, to have a specific objective in mind, and to pursue something until it is found. Seeking implies that the seeker is aware that what they are looking for does indeed exist.
On the other hand, "search" means to conduct a broad exploration, browse, and look more broadly for something. However, searching for something does not guarantee its discovery.
These specific distinctions apply to the Biblical nativity story. The Wise Men traveled a great distance to find Jesus. They were very serious about their quest and were sure of His existence. They were determined to keep going until they found what they sought. My study Bible labels them as Seeking Christ.
King Herod had a different approach than the Wise Men regarding the search for the child. He was not as convinced as they were and was still determining what he sought. Herod ordered his men to "Go and search carefully for the child." However, despite their efforts, they never found him.
By simply examining the meaning of the words "seek" and “search”, we can draw meaningful conclusions. First, if we actively and deliberately pursue Him with a firm conviction of His existence, we will undoubtedly find Him.
And second, we are unlikely to find Him if we lack focus and intentionality and merely browse.
When you seek me, you will find me,...(Jer. 29:13)
