Astonished
When our children were younger, they were very nervous about going to the doctor or dentist. While we waited in the waiting room or the doctor's office, I would try to distract their anxious thoughts and engage them with something else. I would remind them of a fun experience we had together in the past to stir their excitement, or I would astonish them with something fun we can do afterward. This approach always seemed to soothe their worries and put a little pep in their step.
It’s nearly impossible to feel excited while also worrying at the same time.
Throughout the New Testament, Jesus’ followers faced many challenges as they journeyed into the unknown. I found that Jesus often encouraged them in a similar way. He inspired a sense of “awe” and wonder among his followers, astonishing them with his gracious words and the miracles that followed. Their ongoing admiration for what he was doing helped eliminate their fears, even in the face of danger.
In Mark chapter 10, there’s a moment when Jesus was leading his followers to Jerusalem. Everyone was aware of the danger that awaited them there, and it was no secret that the religious leaders of Jerusalem were intent on killing Jesus. The Bible mentions that, while Jesus led the way, “the disciples were astonished, and those who followed were afraid” (verse 32). Notice the two separate groups.
Jesus desires to guide us in the same way today. Through the gracious words of His teachings, He aims to inspire a sense of awe within us. He wants to make us aware of the small daily miracles that often go unnoticed in our lives. As a result, our worries and fears will begin to fade, leaving us astonished.
Therefore once more I will astound these people with wonder upon wonder; (Is. 29:14)
