Precious Stones

About an hour's drive from where we live is a famous natural attraction in New York State: Howe Caverns. This site features over a mile of breathtaking natural limestone caves that tourists can explore. To be honest, the caves are dark and damp, and I used to find them a bit creepy and uninviting. I wondered how others found them amusing. However, I soon discovered that they offer an incredible experience and are among the few remaining precious stone caves in the world. The tour guides share insights about the long history of the caves' formation. I specifically remember one tour guide mentioning that every time he visits, he discovers something new that he hasn't seen in his 30 years of exploring them.

Precious stones hold significant meaning in the Bible. They are most often mentioned in the construction of the magnificent temple described in the Old Testament. The Bible reports that these stones were derived from quarries, which are described as large, deep, dark pits. The stones were extracted from these depths and used as building material for the glorious temple.

For us, New Testament Christians, this also holds spiritual meaning.  We also gather materials for our spiritual temple. I discovered that the most valuable insights often arise from the most challenging and dark experiences. Trials and the hardest moments of our lives can reveal valuable truths that shape us spiritually. These insights come to light when we connect our experiences with God's word. Though hardships may not appear pleasant or inviting, and we often resist them, they can lead us to uncover the most precious stones for our spiritual building.

Some will use gold or silver or precious stones in building on the foundation; others will use wood or grass or straw.  (1 Co. 3:12)

I will rebuild you with stones of turquoise,…and all your walls of precious stones. (Is. 54:11-12)

I will give you treasures hidden in dark and secret places… (Is. 45:3)
