Hit the Spot
Only one of our daughters is a true foodie; she has really developed a refined palate. Every time I pick her up from school, she has a different craving. It usually goes like this: “Mom, do you know what will really, really hit the spot?” Sometimes she craves pho, other times it’s sushi, and then there is always her favorite bowl place. Now obviously, I don’t always take her out, but sometimes she will nag me until I do. The other girls, for the most part, don’t really care; they just go with the flow and eat what I have prepared. But I know in time they will be just like her, they will develop their own taste and craving for things.
My journey with the word of God has been a similar experience. The Bible teaches that the word is like food for our souls. Initially, I didn’t have much of a taste for it; I just read it bluntly. However, the more time I spent in the Word, the more my spiritual palate began to develop. I wasn’t satisfied with merely reading; it had to relate to me. It had to speak to me. It had to hit the spot. This process sometimes requires a period of praying, watching, and waiting. Like my daughter, I earnestly ask the Holy Spirit to feed me what my soul craves.
“Does the ear not put words to the test, Just as the palate tastes its food [distinguishing between the desirable and the undesirable]? (Job 12:11)
I will stand at my guard post And station myself on the tower; And I will keep watch to see what He will say to me... (Hab. 2:1)
But solid food is for the mature, who because of practice have their senses trained… (Heb 5:14)
He said to me, “Son of man, eat this scroll that I am giving you and fill your stomach with it.” So I ate it, and it was as sweet as honey in my mouth. (Ez. 3:3)
