Learn it Hands-on
Hands-on learning (experimental learning) is a form of education that has significantly revolutionized the classroom and the learning experience.
Simply put, it is a method of learning by doing.
Educators have discovered that this is the absolutely most effective way that students learn.
Thus, they are continually changing classroom curriculums by shifting from passively listening and reading lengthy lectures to allowing students to learn by partaking in activities and real-life experiments.
Not only does it increase retention of the material, it also allows them to practice it through problem solving.
However, Jesus was already teaching his listeners to implement experimental learning thousands of years ago.
He shares a parable that put believers into two categories of learners.
Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man…
But everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man…(Matt. 7:24-26 NIV)
Other translations specifically says those that “hear and do” what it says versus those that “hear and don’t do” what it says.
What made the first wise was he took what he heard and put forth the effort to apply what he learned. He tested the word out. He made it a hands-on experience.
While the second passively heard it and did nothing about it. It was simply added information.
When we make God’s word a hands-on, experimental lesson, it's more likely that we will retain it later. It becomes mentally embed into the mind so that it can be retrieved and implemented in everyday living.
