Near to the Heart
Childbirth is one of the most terrifying and fascinating experiences I've ever had. My most treasured moment is the initial meeting with my precious newborn. However, despite this being a joyous feeling for me, the baby is anything but joyful. They have just been through the most stressful experience and are distraught, anxious, and upset. This is when the medical staff quickly places the crying baby on my bare chest, initiating skin-to-skin contact. Every time, after a short period, the baby calms and relaxes.
The intimate contact between mother and baby is a remarkable phenomenon. Experts have found that this contact regulates the infant’s heart rate, breathing, and body temperature. Seeing the baby’s heart and vitals gradually align and become in sync with mine is truly astonishing. I suddenly developed a deep sense of connection with my newborn.
There were moments in my life when uncertainty hit me very hard. Much like the little baby I held on my chest, I felt anxious, confused, and upset. I sought help from every direction. But my soul didn’t find peace and rest until I earnestly sought God and encountered his presence in quiet prayer. It was as if I was drawing near his heart and chest.
…the Lord our God is near us whenever we pray to him…(Deut. 4:7)
Though it didn’t immediately resolve all my circumstances, his presence comforted me.
Every time I intimately draw near in prayer, his heart soothes my anxious heart and makes it align with his.
He gathers the lambs in his arms and carries them close to his heart;…(Is. 40:11)
