Open Wide
While working on my professional degree, I completed fieldwork in four different medical settings. I enjoyed my time in the school setting most. We engaged the children in many fun activities that appeared to be simple crafts, but these tasks allowed us to assess their skills. We focused on monitoring specific developmental areas.
I spent a lot of time assessing children's attention spans and concentration. I learned to closely observe changes in their body language and facial expressions as they engaged in the activities. Facial expressions are so important for assessing attention and focus. For instance, when children are very focused or deep in thought, there is an increase in blood flow to the brain. This causes their mouth muscles to relax, and their mouths may unconsciously remain open for some time. This is usually a sign that their minds are entering one of the highest forms of focus and concentration.
When I read the following verse, I was immediately reminded of my clinical experience:
"Open your mouth wide, and I will fill it." (Psalm 81:10)
When we come before God, He desires our full attention and concentration. We open our hearts wide to receive when we give him all our attention. By studying His Word with complete focus and expectation, we can trust that He will fill us with His wisdom and guidance.
...And he fixed his attention on them, expecting to receive something...(Acts 3:5)
