The Fear of the Lord

I must complete several continuing education courses every few years to maintain my professional license. I remember enrolling in a two-day psychology-related course one year.  When I arrived, I was surprised by the large crowd; usually, only a handful of people attend. This time, the entire banquet hall was full.

I brought some of my work and half-heartedly endured the long two days. Many participants gathered around the speaker, eagerly awaiting their turn to ask questions. I was there just to collect my credits. Yet, upon completing the course, I began receiving a newsletter from the speaker. As I read his writings, I discovered his impressive credentials, global recognition, and the audiences he attracted. The more I read his writings, the more fascinated and impressed I became with his thoughts. I developed a deep respect for his work and realized I would eagerly accept another opportunity to hear him speak and give him my full attention.

Initially, I didn’t pay much attention to the speaker or his message. However, as my appreciation for his achievements grew, so did my interest in everything he shared.

The same occurred in my relationship with the Lord. For a long time, I lived in ignorance of God because I didn't have a deep reverence for Him; I lacked what the Bible refers to as "the fear of the Lord." However, as I spent more time studying the Word, I developed a sense of honor and respect for Him. His wisdom fascinated me and made me eager to learn more. I became fully engaged, giving Him my complete attention while in his presence.

Our deep respect and reverence for God grow as we spend more time in the scriptures. As our Fear of the Lord increases, we are then able to offer Him the attention he deserves and our utmost admiration.

…He shall read it all the days of his life, that he may learn to fear the LORD his God and be careful to observe all the words of this law and these statutes,... (Deu. 17:19)

The fear of the Lord is the begining of wisdom…(Pr. 9:10)
