God's Choice Warrior

 

Years ago, when my brother-in-law joined the police academy, he endured intense training. The old-school methods were quite different from how academies operate today. He said it was one of the hardest experiences of his life. The physical demands were challenging, but the mental exhaustion was even tougher. The training officers pushed the recruits to their limits, issuing strict orders and testing their ability to remain calm and strong under pressure. Many students could not handle the mental pressure and dropped out; only a few who learned to ignore the taunts made it through.

The program wasn’t designed to break anyone. Its purpose was to help them grow, both physically and mentally. It aimed to identify the best candidates and prepare them for the realities of the job.

In the Bible, I see a similar kind of training that God sometimes allows in believers' lives. His aim is not to break us but to produce an army of strong warriors capable of fulfilling any assignment. 

One such story in the Old Testament is about King David. At one point, he had to flee for his life because his son Absalom sought to take over his throne. The Bible describes David on his way to Bahurim when a man named Shimei began to taunt him with false accusations, saying, “You are getting what you deserve. This is going to be the end of you.” David’s men were furious and wanted to kill Shimei, but David refused to take action. He said that the Lord had allowed Shimei to speak this way. David said, “Even my own flesh, my son, has turned against me. Maybe the Lord will see my distress and reward me.” He trusted in God’s control over the situation. David ignored Shimei’s taunts and continued to Bahurim, feeling exhausted. However, the Bible tells us that David was refreshed when he got there. (2 Samuel 16:5-14)

Sometimes, the tests and trials we face can feel as if we are running for our lives, just like David. In reality, we are on a journey to Bahurim. The name Bahurim means "choice young men" or "selected warriors." God is on a mission to make us His chosen warriors. On this journey, the enemy of our souls may hurl taunts at us with lies, as David experienced. We might hear thoughts like "This will destroy you," "You deserve this," or "You are paying for everything you have ever done wrong." David noted that even his own flesh- his son turned against him. We might feel as if our own minds are working against us in these moments. It’s crucial to remember, as David did, that God, in His sovereignty, has allowed this to happen in our lives. The only way forward is to ignore the enemy's lies as best we can. God will help us reach our destination of becoming His chosen warriors. Like David, we may arrive feeling exhausted, but there is a promise of refreshment when we get there.
