Become a Well

I admire how Jesus frequently used real-life pictures to illustrate basic spiritual truths.  He specifically chose tasks that were relevant and part of the lives of his listeners in order to really drive his message home.

My favorite perhaps, is his encounter with the Samaritan woman at the well.

At the time, one of the most important duties of every woman was to manage the household water supply.

I watched a present-day Netflix documentary on women of remote Africa and the daily challenges they face to supply clean water for their families.  I was astonished how much survival is literally centered around this one simple task.

There is no taking a sick day.  All of their daily planning and activities were arranged around their mandatory trips to the well.

While the Samaritan woman vents to Jesus of her routine trips, how she’d do anything not to come, he interrupts her with “I can make you a walking, living well!” (paraphrased)

Just like every well is connected to an underground water source, you must first get connected to me.

When you’re in constant connection to me, just like this well, you will become a well with living water pouring out of you.

But whoever drinks from the water that I will give…the water I will give him will become a well of water. (John 4:14 CSB)

Staying constantly connected (through prayer and reading of the word) can be just as laborious as the women that had to daily prioritize their journey to the well.  However, it’s a mandatory practice that is absolutely vital to the survival of your spirit man.
