Understanding God

I have to admit, prior to marriage, cooking has always been an under-developed skill of mine.  I always felt there were more important things to master.  It wasn’t until I got married that I had the terrible realization that cooking was now going to be a major part of my role as wife and mother.

I began by acquiring many different cook books. Prior to the arrival of our children, we took many evening trips to Barnes and Nobles.  While my husband was catching up on the latest building trends, I was snaping photos of recipes for my collection.

However, acquiring recipes didn’t at all change my ability to prepare meals.  It wasn’t until I began to apply them, starting with the simplest of course, that I slowly began to grasp the knowledge of cooking.  The more I practiced, the more comfortable I felt with every next meal. With time, every meal began to grow in complexity. And to be honest, I’ve really come to enjoy it.  Especially the adapting of recipes to my own liking.

I discovered that in the spiritual world, an understanding of God also only comes with the application of his truths.  It’s not enough just to memorize and acquire knowledge of them.  Just as acquiring recipes didn’t quite give me a good understanding of the art of cooking.

The psalmist writes…

a good understanding have all they that do his commandments: (Ps. 111:10 KJV)

Notice it says “all they that do his commands”, NOT “all they that know his commands”.

It wasn’t until I genuinely began to live out the Bible, that I truly began to understand it. Putting elementary truths into practice, became building blocks for understanding further complex truths.  The more I applied the truths I learned, the more my understanding broadened.
