Obedience of One
As most parents, I regularly assign my children tasks around the home. When introducing a child to a chore they haven’t done before, they almost always respond with “You want me to do this all by myself?”.
Even the simplest of tasks, often require much encouragement and convincing. Despite the fact that I promise to support them all along the way.
All through-out the scriptures I encounter GOD looking for the simple obedience of one to accomplish his purposes.
Specifically, obedience to his word.
And in every case, it was through the obedience of one, that entire nations were subdued.
My study Bible defines the obedient as “hearers and doers”. Those that consistently hear God’s word, and do what it says.
This week I spent some time studying the story of a king named Josiah.
Josiah became Israel’s reigning king at the age of 8. What separated him from the kings preceding his reign was his diligent obedience to God’s word. He was a “hearer and a doer”.
When the king heard what was written in the Law, he tore his clothes in despair. (2 Chr. 34:19 NLT)
Then the king stood in his place and made a covenant before the LORD, to follow the LORD, and to keep His commandments and His testimonies and His statutes with all his heart and all his soul, to perform the words of the covenant that were written in this book. (vs.32)
Josiah…made all who were present in Israel serve the LORD their God. Throughout his lifetime they did not turn from following the LORD God of their fathers. (vs.33 Amp)
Because Josiah sought after the commands of the Lord and did what they said, an entire nation remained faithful. God can accomplish much with your simple obedience. Don’t underestimate the impact of one.
