Best Seats
I was still attending high school when I was hired for my first real job. It was a server position for a local assisted living facility. I was a waitress in a dining hall that served the elderly residents of that home.
I worked less than fifteen hours a week, but now that I had my own spare cash to spend I couldn’t be more thrilled.
That is, until the holidays rolled around and I found myself on the work schedule.
That was a hard lesson learned.
While my mom was cooking up a holiday feast and the rest of my family were in their most festive holiday spirits, I was reluctantly getting ready for my work shift.
Though I would do anything in the world to be home with my family that day, I think for the first time I learned what serving others truly meant.
While instructing his disciples, Jesus too began to speak to them about what service in his kingdom looked like.
He said, “You guys think the best seats in the house are reserved for those that are seated and being served. But I say the best roles in the house are filled by those that are serving.”
Who is more important, the one who sits at the table or the one who serves? The one who sits at the table, of course. But not here! For I am among you as one who serves… (Lu.22:27 NLT)
He then continues with…
And just as my Father has granted me a Kingdom, I now grant you the right… (vs. 29)
However, while you take on the public role of serving others, you gain the right to….
…eat and drink at my table in my Kingdom…(vs.30)
Jesus offers the greatest exchange ever. In the public eye, take on the low role of one who serves. But in the spiritual realm I will give you the best seats in my house. You will be granted the right to feast and dine with me at my table.
A personal invitation to presently have direct access and intimate fellowship with me and my father.
An opportunity to indulge on my word and experience everything it has to offer.
