Pitch Dark
I've never truly experienced pitch darkness until my family moved from the city to the quiet suburbs. The city's bright lights from the streets and buildings often made it feel like it wasn't even dark yet. But in the countryside, when night fell, it was completely dark.
A few times, we lost power during a storm surge and endured complete blackouts. Then, all our household activities and chores were abruptly interrupted. At that point, we could only wait for the lights to be turned on. When my mother would light a small candle on the table, the light attracted the whole family, and we all immediately gravitated towards it.
There were seasons in my life when I also experienced what felt like pitch darkness on the inside. These were seasons of uncertainty and trials. My life felt like it had come to an abrupt halt. Nothing interested me anymore. All I asked of God was to send me His light. The Bible speaks about these moments in Isaiah 29:18.
"In that day the deaf will hear the words of the scroll, and out of gloom and darkness the eyes of the blind will see.
"Another translation says,
"...and out of the deep darkness the eyes of the blind will see.”
Notice they will hear the words of the scroll. I felt God's bright light shine from his word most in my darkest moments. I was immediately attracted to that light and wanted to return to it repeatedly. The message of the Bible hits differently when we are waiting on God.
"...for you welcomed the message in the midst of severe suffering with the joy given by the Holy Spirit." (1 Th. 1:6)
