Hidden Blessings

An acquaintance of ours owns a very wealthy estate and shared a story about a time when a thief raided his home. Everything in the estate was turned upside down, and every hidden nook was searched. Surprisingly, he never concealed his most prized possessions; most were placed within easy reach and only lightly hidden. Although the place was destroyed, the thief focused on searching the most difficult areas and ultimately failed to find the valuable items in plain sight. The owner had strategically placed his treasured possessions in the most obvious but unlikely places.

I have come to realize that God too often places the greatest blessings in the most unexpected places. There are special rewards to be uncovered, but they are usually found where we least expect them. For instance, when Jesus taught his disciples, he said, "You have heard that it was said, 'Love your neighbor and hate your enemy'" (Matthew 5:43). However, he added, "But I say to you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you." In other words, although the world might never understand this teaching, you will discover a special blessing and privilege when you forgive those who hurt you and release their offenses. You might be surprised to find that you in fact have benefited from it most.  This way, "you may be children of your Father in heaven" (verses 44-45).

It is to one’s glory to overlook an offense. (Pr. 19:11)
