Gain through Loss
When my husband and I were engaged, we were surprised to discover how much sacrifice love truly requires. Marriage has a humbling way of teaching us that sometimes we must give up one thing to gain something even more meaningful. We came from different cities, which meant one of us had to leave our beloved hometown to marry the other. We had to give up our beautiful, cozy homes to move into a small, frugal apartment together. Our spending budget was immediately cut in half. When children came into the picture, one of us made the difficult decision to give up our careers and stay home.
Though it was challenging at times and we often found ourselves barely making ends meet, we were determined to do whatever it took to begin this journey together, grow, and support our family.
I believe the kingdom of God operates in a similar way. In Matthew 13:44, Jesus shares a parable that also emphasizes this very concept of gaining through loss.
The parable begins with a man who discovers a treasure hidden in a field. Our spiritual journey with God begins when we fall in love and uncover the treasure found in His Word. When we first experience the deep satisfaction of abiding in His presence, and how it fulfills the longings of our souls.
The man in the parable then hid the treasure again. This symbolizes placing it in our hearts. The psalmist once said, “I have hid Your word in my heart,” or in other words, storing it in your mind.
The man then sells everything he owns. This resembles his willingness to endure loss and do whatever it takes. Our spiritual journey often demands sacrifice and the willingness to face suffering, trials, and tests. It requires determination and a commitment to give whatever it takes.
After selling everything, he buys the field. Ultimately, it is his readiness to go all in and endure all, that enables him to acquire not just the treasure but the entire field. When we embrace a lifestyle of sacrifice, we not only receive the treasure of His Word and presence but also gain entry into His kingdom.
