Pursue him
Is it possible to date someone on the fly? Can you establish a relationship with someone, with set, 15 minute intervals, throughout the week?
I think its common biblical knowledge to claim that God, our creator, longs for relationship and fellowship with us, his creation. And, it’s impossible to claim having a relationship with someone you do not take the time to spend with.
When a young man decides to pursue a young lady, they set times to spend together. Prioritizing these set dates over other set activities. Likewise, in order to build a relationship with Christ, you must set time to spend with him. Previously, we identified this as spending time in his presence. A place where you speak to him in prayer, and take time to listen from his word.
As I recall past dating experiences, I realized that it took time and the right environment to be able to share personal and intimate information about each other. Never, were there set limits for time spent together. Whether it was a few hours, or an entire day. If we met on the fly, anxiously worried about all the demands of the following day, I doubt any connections or intimate information would be shared. Yet, often, that is how we come into his presence. The mind occupied with replays of yesterday, or structured plans for today.
On the Contrary, it is a beautiful thing when two people that deeply care for each other, make time to spend together. Although the location has little significance, they long for places of isolation and less distraction. You feel like you have all day, and often lose track of time. You simply enjoy each other’s presence. You begin opening up your heart, sharing personal dreams and ambitions.
Later, when you’re not together, you find yourself replaying what was said and the intimate thoughts shared.
The Psalmist writes,
Be still, and know that I am God. (Ps. 46:10 KJV)
In other words, come away with me and get quiet. Lay all your “yesterdays” and “tomorrows” aside. Just enjoy my presence.
Notice there’s a comma separating “be still” and “and know”. First, be still, and then you will know.
The word know here, is defined as to experience, or to know by observation. You will begin to experience him in an intimate way. Not only will you open up your heart to him in prayer, he will reveal his thoughts and secrets to you through his word.
When you leave his presence, you will find his thoughts replacing your thoughts, occupying your mind.
For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith the LORD. (Isa. 55:8 KJV)
